General Lawson retired from the United States Air Force after a distinguished career spanning four decades. He achieved a four star rank, received 22 military awards and decorations, and served in the White House as the Military Assistant to President Gerald R. Ford. In his final military assignment he served as the Deputy Commander in Chief of the U.S. European Command.
General Lawson later served as President and CEO of the National Mining Association for fourteen years. General Lawson continues to serve as Vice Chairman of the International Committee on Coal Research and on the Board of Directors of the U.S. Energy Association and as Vice Chairman of the Atlantic Council.
